Can I get a temporary tooth while waiting for a dental implant?

The process of receiving a dental implant is a two step process, and typically requires two procedures. During the first procedure, our oral surgeon drills a small hole into the jawbone. They insert the base of the implant into this hole, and then cover it with the gum and allow it to heal. There is then a period where the patient waits for this area to heal before proceeding with the second surgery. During this second surgery the oral surgeon fits the connector onto the base of the implant, and then attaches the crown to the connector. For a handy diagram of the process, check out this tooth wisdom article. After this second surgery, you get to enjoy your new dental implant that looks exactly like a natural tooth!

Many people want to know about their options for a temporary tooth between these two procedures, while they wait to receive their dental implant. If the tooth being installed is in the back of the mouth, it is not as much of a concern as few can see the area. However, if the implant is going in the front of the mouth, some choose to use a temporary tooth to cover the gap. There are several options available for this. You can go with a dental flipper, which is kind of like a temporary denture that has a false tooth attached to it. Another option is a retainer to cover all of your teeth that will hide the gap. The best thing to do is speak with a dentist about which option is best for your specific situation, but there are options available, such as a temporary crown. In this situation a temporary crown is placed on the base and our dentist gives specific instructions about what to eat or drink until the permanent implant is put in.
