Canker sores are small ulcers appearing on lips, gums, or mouth surfaces—harmless and subside within one to two weeks. Leukoplakia manifests as white patches on mouth lining or tongue, resulting from irritation by ill-fitting dentures, rough teeth, or smoking. Contact your dentist if it persists, as it may signal precancerous conditions. Other sore types warrant professional evaluation for proper treatment.
Acidic foods, tongue or cheek biting, high stress, hormonal changes, and new braces or dentures causing friction can trigger sores. Some cases stem from medical conditions including vitamin deficiencies or celiac disease.
Avoid acidic foods aggravating the area, maintain daily brushing and flossing, and identify causative factors to prevent recurrence.
