Crowns: A restorative dental technique that covers an existing tooth to prevent damage and cavities that could occur
A crown is a dental restoration that caps a tooth for many different reasons. Reasons to install a crown could include things such as:
- covering a decayed or cracked tooth
- preventing future cavities in an already decaying tooth
- modifying the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth
- covering a bridge or dental implant
This is not an exhaustive list by any means, and your needs may be unique to your situation. Our dentists at Lane and Associates would love to speak with you and come up with the best plan for your smile. Schedule an appointment online today or give us a call.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Crowns
Does it hurt to get a crown?
Many fears that people have concerning fillings and crowns are from stories that have been passed down over the years. The procedure for getting a crown is short and should not be painful. A local anesthetic will be administered, typically by a shot in the gums, and this will numb the area of restoration. Once our dentists finish with the procedure the tooth will be sensitive. Cold drinks and snacks like ice cream and slushies should be avoided for the time being.
Do crowns have to be replaced?
Once a crown is in place, it should hold steady for ten to fifteen years. If you experience a noticeable change in your bite, any pain or discomfort located near your existing crown, or your crown is nearing its lifetime, give us a call and let our dentists assess your crown. Our dentists at Lane & Associates can give you an accurate timeline and plan for your crown, and we will help determine what actions should be taken next. Be sure to ask our team about our CEREC one-day therapy.
