Does A Teeth Cleaning Whiten Your Teeth?

smiling dental patient

If you’ve been to the dentist before, you’ve experienced a teeth cleaning before by one of our talented and professional dental hygienists. One of the most popular questions our dental hygienists here receive is: does a teeth cleaning at the dentist whiten your teeth? The answer is yes, at least temporarily! During the process of cleaning your teeth, they will certainly be whitened a bit as we remove any plaque and tartar buildup. However, this is no replacement for professional teeth whitening if you are looking for a more brilliant smile.

Luckily, if you are a new patient, ask about our Free Professional Teeth Whitening Program! Whether you are a new or returning patient, we are a premier provider of cosmetic dentistry services to help you achieve your dream smile. In the meantime, you can enjoy the clean feeling of having a sparkling clean smile after a teeth cleaning by one of our expert dental hygienists. If you are in need of professional teeth whitening or have more questions about teeth cleaning, contact our Lane and Associates team! Our professional and friendly team of dental experts is prepared to answer any of your questions, and help you schedule an appointment at one of our many dental offices throughout NC. We can’t wait to make you smile!

What happens during a teeth cleaning?

Curious exactly what is happening during a teeth cleaning aside from your teeth getting cleaner and whiter? Quite a lot! First, our hygienist will check your teeth and mouth for gum disease, tartar, plaque, or cavities using a small mirror. After this, the hygienist will go around your mouth and get between teeth and around your gums using a scaler. This is that small device that looks like, to be fair, a torture instrument. But it isn’t! It’s simply a cool tool used to get plaque and tartar out from your teeth and prevent cavities.

This cleaning is followed up by a tooth brushing with an electric toothbrush and special toothpaste that is a bit grainier and stronger than the Colgate you have at home. This is used to scrape off any excess tartar or plaque that wasn’t removed. After this, you get a pro-level flossing. During this flossing, you likely get a reminder of why flossing is important. Floss more! Depending on your age or check up frequency, you may be lucky enough to get a flouride cleaning after the flossing to keep your teeth extra clean. After this your teeth will likely look whiter than when you arrived. They’ll definitely be cleaner!
