The North Carolina Dental Society Foundation Golf Challenge was held this past week in Pinehurst, NC at the Pinehurst Resort. Lane & Associates Family Dentistry was proud to be a Tournament Sponsor where all proceeds, totaling more than $40,000, were donated to the North Carolina Missions of Mercy Dental Programs and its free dental clinics.
Two of our teams participated in the Golf Challenge and our very own Dr. Raleigh Wright won the Putting Challenge (for the second year in a row!). Take a look at the photos below to see more of the golf tournament fun!
Our golfers had a fantastic time supporting the North Carolina Dental Society Foundation while social distancing, and are excited to participate again in 2021!

Surgical Masks for Healthcare Professionals
As the world starts to reopen, healthcare professionals across all avenues of specialties are still in need of PPE. Therefore, these medically approved Fabric Surgical Masks are one way that we craft enthusiasts can help! Due to the CDC recommendations, we set out to find a mask solution for the medical community.
Our first round of 900 masks was gladly received by local hospitals and healthcare facilities. Now, however, we want to take it one step further by creating surgical masks with slots to add filters.
WakeMed Hospital sent us directions for a Surgical Mask that allows for a filter to be inserted, along with instructions for ribbon ties versus elastic ties. Namely mentioning that these ties will give continued comfortability throughout long-time wear. We used this pattern as a template to create our own step-by-step surgical mask sewing directions for our volunteers.
Check out our new design below! Much love to WakeMedfor sharing your medical professional sewing pattern. This adaptation has been proven by our doctors to be efficient for continued use and a successful way to help the environment. Likewise, it allows the use of N95 masks to be kept for high-risk frontline workers.
.
Craft Enthusiasts and Volunteers:
Deploy yourselves again! Help us to continue in the fight and push your crafting skills to the next level! Read through our new Surgical Mask Sewing Instructions below, email us at marketing@lanedds.com once you finish, and let’s keep crafting for those that need it most!
Give to a healthcare worker, friend, or return to Lane & Associates to be distributed appropriately. We hope these fabric surgical mask sewing instructions help you to create your own surgical masks for healthcare professionals.
Need materials? Fill out the form at the bottom of this page to request a kit! We would be happy to support as many crafters as possible until supplies run out!
100% Cotton Fabric – Cut (1) 10×16 inch rectangle and (2) 2×6 inch strips.
4 pieces of 1/4 or 3/8-inch ribbons measuring 18 inches in length
Scissors or fabric cutter
Sewing machine
Iron
Cotton or Polyester sewing thread
Sewing pins or wonder clips
Take your 100% Cotton fabric and cut (1) rectangle that is 10 inches wide and 16 inches long. Then cut (2) pieces of fabric into 2×6 inch strips.
With the front side of the fabric facing down (wrong side up), fold over 1/2 inch on the top and bottom (10-inch sides). Press and stitch across both folds.
With the wrong side up, fold the top and bottom edges to meet in the middle and use the iron to press.
On each side of the mask, make 3 pleats. Each pleat should be approximately 1 inch in size with the top two pleats folded down from the top and the bottom pleat folded up from the bottom. These should be centered in the mask, leaving 2-3 inches of flat fabric at the top and bottom of the pleats.
Sew pleats into place.
Fold the lengthwise sides of the 2×6 edging material inwards at the middle and press.
Place the edging material with unfinished sides up and lay the mask front side down. Align the sides to the middle of the edging. Place the ribbon 1/2 inch from the edge corner, pin it into place, and sew across the stitching to hold everything in place.
Fold the top and bottom edging pieces inwards, meeting in the middle. Be sure they cover the raw edges of the mask and ribbon (this may fold the mask inward as well).
Stitch both sides of the edging closed.
Sew (2) 1-inch stitches, approximately 1/4 inch across the top of the mask, so a pipe cleaner can be inserted if desired.
Be sure to finish the ends of your ribbons in some form of fashion. We recommend the quickest approach of safely using a lighter to burn and cauterize the ends. You can also simply roll the ends and stick across.
And there you have it! DIY Surgical Masks for healthcare professionals & beyond!
If you would like to request a surgical mask kit to be delivered or picked up from one of our Lane & Associates dental offices, please fill out the form below. Thank you, craft enthusiasts and healthcare professionals, for everything you continue to do for those in need during COVID-19!
UPDATE: An increasing need as of June 2020 is ear-savers for essential workers wearing masks.
Wearing masks throughout an entire day causes stress on the ears leading to headaches and rubbing of sensitive skin. We would love to help use any materials we still have to also create ear-savers for these essential workers. If you would like to request ear-saver sewing kits to contribute, please fill out the same form below.
Even though many of our offices are temporarily closed, our company is rallying together to give back to our communities during this time of need.
We know many emergency and healthcare systems are remaining open during this time to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and they are continuing to care for other necessary procedures.
In light of this, many of our talented employees have started creating masks for healthcare workers due to the shortages across the world. We have enlisted their help and have started creating kits for each of our employees that they can work on at home during this social distancing period. We are beginning with 870 masks and hope to continue making more! Once the masks are ready, our staff is working with the UNC Health Care system to drop off these masks to those hospitals and medical facilities in need.
Lane & Associates loves North Carolina & we hope that our beautiful state can bounce back from this pandemic quickly. If you would like to help by donating masks of your own, please read below!
How to Make a Mask:
Contact us if you are interested in helping our teams by making masks at home with your family. We have a long list of North Carolina medical facilities that are in need of these masks and want to do as much as possible to help. Email us at marketing@lanedds.com for more details on drop-off locations and deliveries.
We value & appreciate all of our community healthcare heroes! Thank you for all that you are giving & we hope this small act will help.

What you can expect from Lane & Associates Family Dentistry during the Flu & COVID-19 Pandemic
Originally published: March 12, 2020 | Updated: May 14, 2020
At Lane & Associates, we strive to uphold the highest level of care for our patients at all times. During every office visit, your health and safety are our highest priorities. With the recent Flu and Coronavirus (COVID-19), this year’s season has been particularly difficult which reinforces the need for all of us to be vigilant in the prevention of the spread of these diseases.
Our offices follow all of the current recommendations for infection control and disease prevention published by the CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), OSHA, and other significant organizations.
As always, the most important priority at Lane & Associates is the safety and wellbeing of our patients and team members. In addition to our already rigorous daily sanitizing procedures, we will continue to go above and beyond these guidelines. We are increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of the lobby, dental exam chairs, equipment, bathrooms, and all other areas of our offices. At each of our locations, you will also find hand sanitizer next to the front desk. All patients are encouraged to wash their hands frequently during their visits for at least 20 seconds, as the CDC recommends.
New Policies & Procedures (as of May 2020):
As we begin to reopen our offices, you may see some changes during your next appointment.
Our office will communicate with you before your appointment to ask screening questions.
Before entering the building, we are offering curbside check-in and temperature screenings for all patients. All staff are also screened before entering the building each day.
You may see that our waiting rooms are closed or adjusted for social distancing measures. Furniture is further apart and all magazines/children’s toys have been removed (since these items are difficult to clean).
Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. You may also be escorted into and out of the building.
All consent forms, treatment plans, and payments may be presented to you in the treatment room.
Hand sanitizer or hand-washing stations will be available for patient use.
We may ask you to wait in your car to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.
7 Health recommendations during this Flu & Virus Season:
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, avoid close contact with others to prevent them from getting sick as well.
If you are sick, please postpone any non-emergency or elective dental procedures until you are feeling well. If you are unsure, please call your home office to discuss your treatment with your dental provider.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you are coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
Wash your hands as set by the guidelines from the CDC. **See the Handwashing Instructions infographic below**
Do not hoard medical masks or gloves as these are needed by healthcare professionals. Due to the high demand, the CDC does not recommend the general public buying these items but instead practicing everyday preventive actions, such as washing hands, covering your cough, and staying home when you are sick.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, take care of your oral health, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
Washing Your Hands the Right Way
One of the most important steps in preventing the spread of infection is to consistently wash your hands as set by the guidelines from the CDC. See our infographic below with step by step instructions on how to properly wash your hands. The basics to remember are to rinse with water first THEN lather on the soap. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds and be sure to get underneath your fingernails and in between each finger. If you are wearing rings, either take these off before scrubbing or get underneath during your 20-second scrub. Rinse your hands with clean water once you’ve completed scrubbing. Remember, after rinsing – use the paper towel or one-use towel to turn off your sink.
Watch this video from the CDC with FAQs about Handwashing:
Next Steps…
According to the American Dental Association, “Respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette infection control measures along with contact precautions are currently recommended for preventing transmission of COVID-19 and all flu-like illnesses in a dental healthcare setting.”If you currently have the flu or have had direct contact with anyone diagnosed with the Flu or the Coronavirus, or if you have recently traveled to an area where the Coronavirus is prevalent, please inform one of our team members.
All of our employees are well trained and given periodic updates on infection control policies and procedures to ensure that your visit and treatment at Lane & Associates is as safe and comfortable as possible. As always – we sincerely appreciate your trust in us to provide your dental care.

Our Spring cleaning turned into Summer cleaning but we raised some funds along the way!
Since the original Yard Sale date was rained out TWICE, we were so happy to finally hold our Warehouse yard sale benefitting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Staff at each of our dental offices donated items ranging from clothes to toys to large kitchen gadgets to help us raise money for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund on Saturday, June 22nd. We are so thankful for the entire Fuquay-Varina community for showing up to our Warehouse Yard Sale and graciously donating to a cause dear to our hearts!
Our dental staff put out yummy snacks and drinks for sale while participants came to shop. They also helped many folks carry large items to their vehicles. Not to mention the hours of labor leading up to the event – through arranging transport from far away offices like Winston-Salem or tagging each toy with price tags. We are so grateful for our team!
Take a look at the photos from the event below! We also want you to keep a look out for our upcoming raffle in July! It’s benefitting Kay Yow Cancer Fund once again to help us complete our goal of raising $50,000! Here’s a hint…we do it every year and always sport some fabulous Summer suns on our shirts! 🌴Can you guess what it is?
Our offices will be closed from December 24th through December 29th to celebrate the holidays. We’ll be back and ready to assist you on Monday, December 30th.
We wish you a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!
